Dawn and sunrise at Dysart.

I managed to get up earlyish this morning and head to Dysart with Betsy for dawn and a sunrise (Day off work). Over the past couple of days I was looking at the weather forecast and it looked good. When I arrived approximately 60 minutes before sunrise, the cloud coverage was excellent, as in little low, medium and high cloud coverage. I use an app called clear outside for this, including the met office. I decided to use the drone for my dawn image and my DSLR for the sunrise image.

I took a panorama image manually from my drone and stitched three images together in LR when I got back home. I love the colours and shadows. I love being out before sunrise too. I’m glad that the dawn and sunrises are going to be later in the day as we move into Autumn and Winter.

I headed back to the car, I put away my drone and got the tripod and DSLR out, I walked to a spot on the beach looking for a nice composition, and I knew in advance where the sun would rise. Again, I use an app called photo ephemeris. It shows the position of the sun and moon at different times of the day. Its so easy to go out and the sunrise can be obscured from the landscape, I wanted the sun straight out to sea.

With the camera, I did use aperture priority for the first couple of images, but I was not happy with that, so I decided to use the manual settings. In future, I will use this for sun rises and sun sets, as I felt I had better control of the exposure. Betsy and I were not waiting too long for the sun rise. The sun rise was approximately 0625.

When the sun rises, the colours constantly change. Keep taking images every 30 seconds or so. When the sun is above the horizon early on, it leaves a beautiful shadow in the water, so don’t just pack up and go when the sun starts to rise. Wait and observe, the colour in the sky changes, and always be ready to take another image of the sun rising, it may be your best shot. (I learned from this mistake last year).

Below is the image taken from my DSLR.

Sunrise at Dysart.

My DSLR was on a tripod, 2 second delay in the shutter, to prevent unwanted camera shake. (used a shutter release). Focal length -10mm. f-stop - f16. ISO-100, exposure time - 1/90s, Manual setting.

I will be back out during the Autumn and winter months with my DSLR and drone for more sunrises. I don’t know exactly where I will be next, but I will be looking at the weather forecast, and also my maps to look for a nice location for my next sunrise.

Thank you for looking at my images and blog.
